What Causes Fibromyalgia?

Researchers and physicians are still working to determine what exactly causes Fibromyalgia. Though they have not yet determined a single cause, they have identified numerous triggers that might lead to an onset of symptoms.

Some of the more common triggers identified include:

  • Viral infection
  • Bacterial infection
  • Automobile accident
  • Development of similar disorder including arthritis, lupus or hypothyroidism

Researchers believe that these events don’t actually cause Fibromyalgia but may trigger the disease in a person who already has an underlying disposition towards Fibromyalgia.

There are many theories that exist related to Fibromyalgia. Some suggest that an abnormal immune system function may stimulate Fibromyalgia in patients. Others believe there is a link between sleep physiology and hormonal irregularities, because Fibromyalgia so often affects women.

Still other theories suggest that there may be alterations in patient’s pain related chemical transmitters in the body which may result in illnesses.
