New York Daily News News Story
From: NewsTrove.com
"You run away for a while. You go to your friend's house in California and hang with the guy who gave you a place to crash when you were a rookie with the A's in 1995, the guy whose T-shirts you wear, the guy whose Porsche you borrowed on a day you happened to go 4-for-4 so you kept it as a lucky charm.
If you're Jason Giambi, you go to Ron Simms' house because it seems like the best place to escape from the newspaper reports that say you admitted to using steroids during your supposedly-sealed grand jury testimony, a knockout blow for you in what has already been a year of wrenching stomach punches."
Edison runs Yuba City out of playoffs
From: NewsTrove.com
"Edison (22-5) trailed most of the
game until Ebony Mims-Johnson made a 3-pointer to put the Vikings up 29-28 midway
through the third quarter. The Honkers (21-6) still were within one early in
the fourth period, but Griffin and Crystal Jackson made back-to-back 3-point
baskets and Derkisha Wofford converted a three-point play to spark a 17-2 run
over the final seven minutes.
"They're bigger than us, but we
knew they weren't as fast," Reed said. "Most teams don't like running, but our
kids are used to it, so we just kept the game fast."
NBA.com: Bulls Clamp Down on Bobcats
From: NewsTrove.com
"Chandler entered the game one minute later and immediately stole the ball from Charlotte rookie Emeka Okafor. Antonio Davis hit a pair of free throws on the other end to give Chicago the lead for good with three minutes to play, and Chandler rejected Keith Bogans' layup attempt 10 seconds later.
"I knew what I had to do when I came in there," Chandler said. "It was just a matter of getting my body to do it and finally it caught up. Sometimes that bench can be a monster coming off of and the body won't adapt."
"He had an unbelievable burst of energy," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said of Chandler."
Calleri, Puerta gain Mexican Open semis
From: NewsTrove.com
"ACAPULCO, Mexico — Agustin Calleri beat fourth-seeded Jiri Novak 7-5, 6-1 in a matchup of former champions Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Mexican Open.
Calleri won his only ATP title in Acapulco two years ago, and had never played Novak, the 1998 singles and doubles champion.
"I'm really doing well physically, responding well to the heat," said Calleri. "I don't know how many degrees it was outside, but you could really feel it. The important thing is that out there we were playing long points but I held up well."
Calleri advanced to face Albert Montanes, who eliminated sixth-seeded Filippo Volandri 4-6, 6-3, 6-4."
CANOE -- JAM! Movies - Oscars: Oscar hopes to Rock
From: NewsTrove.com
"As the 77th Oscars get down to business tonight, the weather forecasts are hopeful, the security is tight and Chris Rock is so loose that ABC-TV has imposed a viewer warning and a seven-second delay.
That is so uptight TV types can bleep the host's possible F-bombs or trim even the scripted remarks that reportedly have censors squirming over what is acceptable.
"My feeling is it's a terrible idea," Academy Awards producer Gil Cates said of the delay on Friday. "But it's ABC's network."
