The Centers for Disease Control says hospital emergency departments treated 4.3 million persons (or one in 65 people nationwide) with sports and recreation-related injuries from July 2000 through June 2001.
The North Bay is especially ripe for the integrated sports medicine clinics and programs that are popping up in the area, according to Jim Dietz, MD, medical director for the emergency department at Marin General Hospital."

"Queens astronaut Charlie Camarda has been given the crucial job of determining if shuttle Discovery can safely fly back to Earth next month on NASA's return voyage to space.
On Flight Day 2, Camarda will be part of a team that will use the shuttle's robotic arm with laser sensors checking for possible damage to the protective heat tiles.
It was damage to heat tiles on the shuttle Columbia that led to its destruction on Feb. 1, 2003.
The Discovery's crew also will rely on Camarda's doctoral engineering skills in metal fatigue and high-temperature stress to make a last-minute inspection of Discovery's underbelly before the final descent."
