One by one, they nervously approached the microphone to list their symptoms: extreme fatigue, aches, blurred vision, balance problems, difficulty speaking. Then the misdiagnoses: fibromyalgia, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, Lou Gehrig's disease.
But the more than two dozen people who testified before a state Senate committee Thursday all finally found the cause of their troubles was Lyme disease, a troubling illness spread by deer ticks."

"Carol Mieczkowski has arthritis and fibromyalgia, among other health challenges.
But the Webster woman faces them with confidence and knowledge, thanks to the helpful librarians at the Stabins Wellness Information Center at Rochester General Hospital. They've sent her facts about medications, treatments and strategies to ease symptoms.
"It helps me with my illness, whenever I have a flare-up," says Mieczkowski, who's 60. "I know there's hope."
Reliable, up-to-date facts are especially helpful in this era when many patients try to be an informed partner - with their physician - about their medical care."

"There is so much grief in this illness. I am meant to be studying my final four subject for my degree this year. Have come to the city especially to do it. And my health is deteriorating to the extent that I am starting to think I will have to let go of this. I can't believe it! But my brain is idling instead of performing the agile feats needing to produce tertiary level essays. I am nothing short of depressed. And I don't know where to turn even. I know psychologists have good things to say but lack the funds. This is miserable."

"I havn't updated in a while. It's an ongoing battle that I see every night. Due to the pain my mom has become an alcoholic whether she admits it or not. I don't like dealing with it. I KNOW I can't change her actions. I realize that it does help relax her muscles. Thing is, can't the alcohol do more harm than good in the long run? There is probably some huge scientific study and information about it but i'm not able to find any.
Has anyone tried other methods such as holistic or whatnot? My mom has tried everything from electrical stimulation to acupuncture. I think she's to the point of completely giving up (really depresseed and i'm afraid she'll do something horrible). She says she's helping herslf but all I see is multiple glasses of wine daily. She never gets online to maybe look for clinics or research studies. If it's not 45 minutes away she wont' even try it. I feel so bad for her, I don't want her to be in pain. I don't know what to do."

"I think I want to get back into physical therapy. My pain doctor has been doing the procedures with killing the nerves, so I'm thinking I'm going to have some major relief after they are all done. I realize how out of shape I am, since I've been homebound and sometimes bedbound for over 2 years now.
My doctor wants me to do water therapy, but he is talking about just joining a class/group that does it, and not one on one exercise. I think I would have an easier time working with just a physical therapist by myself instead of having to share one with 10 other people. That way all of the exercises would be suited for me, and only me, and I think that's better.
Plus, he's wanting me to go to this weight loss specialist, and I need to lose a ton of weight and I want to have muscle tone after I lose it. Of course I have to discuss this with my doctor and see if he thinks it's a good idea, and I have to ask my mother because she would be the one taking me and paying for it. Until then I have started doing some exercises, they are the really gentle ones I did when I was in physical therapy before, the physical therapist gave me a bunch of sheets with all different kinds of exercises on them when we found out the insurance company wouldn't cover it anymore. I am starting really slowly, the most I do is ten repetitions (is that the right word?) of an exercise, no more than that because I don't want to hurt myself.
Sooo, do you ladies think this is a good idea? Mandas"
