" It's been said that the sensation of pain is one memory our brains forget. But it is very real to us at the time, especially when we are children. As parents we develop concerns and questions about pain, particularly what it means when our children are in pain. We asked Richard Helffrich, MD, a pediatric anesthesiologist, to answer some frequently asked questions about pain. ..."

"Sunday April 10, 2005 Canada's hate laws are not a dangerous instrument used to isolate, alienate and criminalize people, as Doug Christie, lawyer for David Ahenakew, has been quoted saying. But they are very useful for one thing: trying bigots for their racist comments. One wonders if their existence and implementation is going to teach anybody anything, least of all Ahenakew himself. "If people have to look over their shoulder every time they open their mouths and consider whether they are going to be charged, only those with power will be able to speak," Christie is quoted as saying outside the Provincial Court."

DWI laws add to their grief
From: NewsTrove.com

"As far as Paul and Bernadette Kato are concerned, Kristian A. Kemp got away with murder. Kemp, who had two previous drinking-related traffic convictions, killed their son, 17-year-old Matthew Kato, last summer in a drunken driving crash in Henrietta. Because Kemp was driving his sports car at up to 100 mph when he smashed into Kato's car, prosecutors persuaded a grand jury to bring a charge of second-degree murder - rare in a DWI fatality. If convicted, Kemp, 39, could have been imprisoned for 25 years to life."

Easing your pain through a life of crime
From: NewsTrove.com

"You may know me as a television talk-show host, but here in 40 states, I am also a criminal. My crime? Using the medicine that has allowed me to lead a normal life, despite having multiple sclerosis: medical marijuana. Being diagnosed with MS, in 1999, felt like a death sentence. I doubted my ability to function as a father, son, brother, friend, talk-show host and producer. I honestly couldn't see a future. I had always taken excellent care of my body; I'd worked out, followed a healthy diet and looked the picture of health."

I really related to this site. I've had a rough weekend with a lot of triggers. Lately I am scared because I am doing a support group that is bringing up a lot of feelings and I am afraid I am going to get overwhelmed and spend more time in the past than the present."

"My mother, bless her heart, calls me on the phone often to be her medical second opinion. This would be fine, if it were for her dog, but instead, it is usually for herself. While I remind her that I am not a physician, much less a board-certified neurologist, I do try to offer my own thoughts. And there really are some parallels between humans and my veterinary patients. So I don't diagnose or treat people, but there are, in many ways, more similarities than differences. One example of this can be found in the comparative similarity between the knee, or stifle, of dogs and humans."
